In prison, the rumor mill operates its own form of “social media.” It took no time for information to spread through the general population about Taylor. There is an unspoken hierarchy within a prison and rapists-especially those who raped young children-were especially reviled. However, the prison policy was that the warden had to authorize locking down any inmate before the correctional officers could reassign one, and they could not reach the warden. As a result, guards escorted Taylor back to his regular unit.
