Hi! I’m Joan Renner, a multi-talented individual with a passion for all things true crime. As a seasoned author, blogger, historian, archivist, tour guide, and sought-after TV and podcast commentator, I’ve carved out a unique niche in the world of crime storytelling.
Back in 2007, I turned my lifelong fascination with crime into something more tangible by blogging for a local true crime blog. Little did I know this step would lead me down a thrilling path filled with unexpected opportunities and exciting twists.
I created my true crime blog, Deranged L.A. Crimes, in December 2012. An unexpected consequence of the blog is connecting with victims of violent crime. By organizing a write-in campaign to the governor, I helped a woman whose husband was brutally murdered keep the killer in prison for a few years longer. I am an open ear for people who need someone to talk to. Through conversations with rape victims, a survivor of child sex trafficking, and the half-sister of a victim of a serial child killer, I now have a clearer understanding of the effects of crime on people and their loved ones.
In 2009, when given an opportunity to volunteer at the Los Angeles Police Museum, I jumped at the chance. I spent over 6 years there. I worked on exhibits and even a book, LAPD ’53, written by James Ellroy and co-authored by Glynn Martin. My next chance to contribute as a volunteer came in 2016, when I began working with the curator of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Museum—I am still there today. The volunteer work has expanded my knowledge of law enforcement and crime in the City of Angels.
With over 60 TV shows and podcastsAs an expert commentator on over 60 TV shows and podcasts, I’ve shared my insights and knowledge with audiences around the globe. I enjoy sharing stories that fuel my passion with private groups, esteemed societies, or professional organizations.
