There are a lot of reasons I wanted to come up with a new hero for a new time, but the main one is this: many people today think no one cares about them any more. Folks feel helpless, impotent, outgunned and outmanned against a world that seemingly grows more tense and implacable with each passing hour. The days trend bleak, the moorings have slipped, and there are no handles out there.
Against such, people hope—desperately they hope—that if they ever found themselves up against it one terrible day, options gone, rats scurrying, the sharp pendulum relentlessly lowering its ocher blade toward their bleeding and heartsick chests, at the last second someone would arrive who’d stop the knife and kill the rats and guide them safely out.
What they don’t need is a superhero-type jackanape blessed with gleaming orthodontia and sleek musculature, a jester delegated to a caped and garish fantasy world no one has ever seen; that illusion is chimera and crap and utterly useless against the demons who caper and slide across their feet. What they require is a man who’s been just as hurt as they have, a wounded warrior who’s suffered just as much loss and pain, a man who, to his cynical shame, sometimes wonders if he’s making a damned bit of difference at all to these damaged ones he finds.
But know this. That same broken man has taken every crashing blow a harsh world has thrown at him. He’s then turned it, absorbed it, refined it, converted it to good, and shared that white-hot fire of hope with others, asking nothing in return but the same courage and resolve be passed on to someone else who may one day need it as well.
…A man very much like John Brenner.
