We can measure physical strength using simple and straight forward methods and metrics. We can measure organisational performance, process efficiency, and outcomes where all these parameters are characterised by the cost and quality of a final product, whether it is something tangible such as a car or sofa, or intangible such as quality of service.
Organisational culture is something that goes beyond simple metrics and common definitions. Thus, understanding it demands the employment of a somewhat metaphysical view – a philosophical explanation of this phenomenon which is embedded in our minds and souls. Culture is made up of our collective endeavours, commitments, emotions, practices, and expectations and thus is dynamic and complex. Individual views on culture can be very different, but in the back of our minds we all know that first of all, culture reflects common values. However, people tend to shade this obvious fact, concentrating on attributes that more easily attract their attention. Is this an inevitable human mistake or a wrongly defined approach to culture management?
Can we precisely measure such human emotions and senses as commitment, effort, respect, loyalty, or satisfaction? The answer is “no”. However, we can manage the firm’s inner psychological state if we know how to influence values and beliefs. For sophisticated culture management, we need to understand the very nature of culture.
Culture is a hierarchy of strands with symbols at the top and trustworthy cultural signs and attributes at the bottom. It defines the area of an organization’s influence and its psychological dimensions where boundaries are signposted by symbols and its inner life is defined by cultural values. Rules function as the guidelines which provide a detailed explanation as to the appropriate behavior in different situations. Signs and attributes aid in understanding an organization’s culture as a system.
