Trust Betrayed: How a Predatory Principal Gained Trust and Left a Trail of Harm by Susan E. WilliamsA Child Died in His Principal's Cabin. Then the Questions Began.

A healthy twelve-year-old dies inside his principal’s remote cabin. The school board allows that principal to return to the classroom.

This was the reality faced by Jeremy Bell’s family and friends. From the beginning, they questioned the claim that Jeremy had simply died of a heart attack. Their search for answers met resistance, delay, and silence.

Years later, a new sheriff and a new team of investigators reopened the case. They discovered that nearly a gallon of chloroform had been shipped to Edgar Friedrichs Jr., Jeremy’s elementary school principal, and paid for from his personal bank account. Investigators also recovered a vial of Jeremy’s blood and the bloodstained, vomit-soaked sheets from the cabin. But the evidence had remained unrefrigerated for fifty-two months. Could it still reveal what happened that night?

Reporter Susan E. Williams covered the case from the day Jeremy’s death first made headlines. In this disturbing account, she examines the unanswered questions, institutional failures, and evidence that may have waited too long to tell its story.

About Author Susan E. Williams

Author Susan E. WilliamsAs an undergraduate, Williams majored in English and minored in history. She also earned a master’s in English from West Virginia University. She began her career in the classroom and then started writing for newspapers. Covering crime and courts became her specialty. As an English major, she could appreciate the dramas that filled the stage of the courtroom. As she covered more cases from magistrate’s court to circuit and federal courts, she accumulated a deep understanding of law. She brought a knowledge of law that helped her research and write this book. The Bell case was a civil case long before any criminal charges were filed against Edgar Friedrichs, Jr.

On July 12, 1976, a peaceful summer morning in Fullerton, California, just 22 miles from downtown Los Angeles, the peace was broken by a horrendous act of violence that would leave seven people dead and two others seriously wounded. The attack took place inside the library at California State University, Fullerton, where a custodian, Edward Charles Allaway, carried out what at the time was the deadliest mass shootings in the county’s history.

Without any real evidence, Allaway became motivated to kill by the delusion that his coworkers were involved in a conspiracy against him, were having sex with his young wife, and forcing her to participate in the creation of pornographic films in the college’s library basement. Driven by these untrue beliefs, he turned a place of peaceful learning into a chamber of horror.
