“Bullied to Death? A Story Of Bullying, Social Media, And The Suicide Of Sherokee Harriman” will be released by WildBlue Press on April 10, 2018. The premier release and author signing will be held April 11, the following day. This will be a different type of premier, and purposely so.
Many people assisted in the telling of Sherokee’s story, from her family and friends to the community, so I wanted to include the community. I wanted them all to be the first people to have the book in-hand, so the premier is immediately after the publisher’s release date.
Sherokee was not an extravagant fourteen-year- old girl who had to have the latest fashions on her back, demanding the most high tech electronics in her fancy purse. So the venue had to have a homey, comfortable feel, family – oriented and personable. I wanted people to be able to be themselves, to visit and talk. I selected Jim N Nick’s Community BBQ, a restaurant known for its good food, great value, community service, and treating their customer like a family friend. And because they are community – oriented, the restaurant supports the same places where many of Sherokee’s loved ones live, work, go to school, and worship.
Readers too often see the persons in the book as one dimensional characters rather than actual living, breathing individuals. So, Sherokee’s family and best friends will be at the premier to greet guests. I want readers to meet the people in this book, the people who loved Sherokee and who knew her best. Sherokee was not just a victim gone too soon, but also a sweet little girl; yes, she had a myriad of issues but deep down inside she just wanted to be loved. It is important to understand Sherokee and her family to understand the story.
For this premier, we are inviting the press because part of the story is how social media affects our lives, including the media’s treatment of her story. This book premier, the family is requesting the media be involved. It is important to recognize what happened to Sherokee in an effort to understand how to help the future Sherokee Harriman’s before tragedy takes them away from us, too.
