As an author, sometimes you're asked to pick a passage from your latest book—either to read it aloud during a podcast or to paste into a blog post.
You pick an action scene or a dramatic moment that you think will resonate with the audience. I've been asked to do this many times, and I'm happy to oblige—and I have my favorite passages ready to go!
But that always feels so controlled to me. Of course, I'm going to showcase what I know is a great scene, but I think that cheats the reader a bit. It's my job to make every page special and worth reading. With my latest book, RUBICON, I am confident I have done that.
Below, you'll find some snippets from my book but with a twist.
I didn't pick any of these passages.
Readers didn't pick any of these passages.
I'm confident enough in the quality of every page of this book that I asked Alexa to pick five page numbers at random. I flipped to those pages and then just went with what I found.
Without further adieu and without a net, here it goes. Five random passages from my latest book RUBICON!
- Page 76 - Dr. Tier has been identified as the hunted leader of the Department of Peace Enforcement by an Assault Corps squad. Will the two sides keep their cool or will everybody die? This is starting strong! I really like this scene. What comes before and after is pure gold as well!
- Page 118 - Salla Birdwing confronts a stranger who knows too much about her, but is he a stranger after all? I love the character of Salla Birdwig. She's just a regular person caught up in incredible drama. Still, she doesn't hesitate to do what needs to be done.
- Page 131 - as Gray closes in, Salla Birdwing sends a desperate message. Another Salla snippet! A person who knows what has to be done and comes through.
- Page 172 - Timberwolf battles Gray, who is transforming into more than a man and becoming incredibly deadly. Before and after this is a fabulous action scene. We see what Gray is becoming and it's terrifying.
- Page 207 - Kizik has found a new home in the mind of Dr. Tier. This is bad for everyone. Dr. Tier is a manipulator and spymaster who is now being manipulated. The thing with her is that she thinks she can turn the tables on the giant psychic spider!
I think that went really well! I'm glad Alexa didn't suggest the last page or something that contained a massive spoiler. Anyway, if you liked those examples, there are 215 more pages of similar quality. Please read RUBICON and its predecessor TIMBERWOLF and let me know what you think! I always love to hear from readers.
