Q&A
Q: What book and or has left the most lasting impact on you as a reader?
A: Moby Dick
Q: What inspired you to write your current book? Are there any specific events, experiences, or ideas that sparked its creation?
A: Filmmaking is a young man's game. Telling stories with film was amazing. Now I can do the same thing and not have to carry heavy equipment or stay on a set for 8 weeks.
Q: What is unique, or special, or particularly interesting about your book?
A: We are losing and deleting our history. Soon people will never know what the actual Mobsters did in our society. Most don’t even know that even as bad as they were, the Italian mob helped us win the war by securing our ports. It’s a Real Life story about what I witnessed. In the 60s, mobsters were heroes to many of those they helped.
Q: What are some interesting or surprising facts related (even tangentially) to your book?
A:
- Mobsters, unlike today's urban killers, lived by a CODE. Women and children were never harmed. Today, carjackings and violence take everyone, no matter what age.
- My dad's gang always helped those less fortunate with things like Turkey giveaways and free lunches for those who needed them. They were bad, but they always took care of their own.
- Mobsters didn’t kill just to kill. Unlike today, they had to have a reason. Today, people are shot at will for no reason at all. There was a sense of character to the old mobster.
- Mobsters were as popular as many of the New York Yankees in their day. Many looked upon them as modern-day Robin Hoods.
Q: What message or emotion do you hope readers will take away from your book?
A: That while much of our history was bad, there was a group of people that always made time to cherish the ones they loved. Mobsters have a living to make. With that said, they believed in the family, God, and taking care of their own.
Q: Do you have any unique writing rituals or habits that help you get into the writing zone?
A: 37 years in Film Production has taught me how to visualize a story long before it gets to paper. In this case, I lived these stories, and I can rerun them in my mind at any time. I can also project what they should look like on the big screen.
Q: How do you engage with your readers and fans? Do you attend book clubs, signings, or events?
A: LOVE TO. I've taught seminars in the past. I would LOVE to take GG on the road and have sessions with my readers. One of my greatest assets is my gift to talk, convince, and sell!
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring authors who are working on their first book?
A: Think…Sit down and Think for weeks or even months. I ALWAYS think about what it looks like and the END, then work backward. KNOWING where you are going is the only way you can get there.
Q: Can you provide a sneak peek or hint about your next writing project?
A: Working on a series of Self Help Books. If you read my bio, you'll know that my life has been a series of knock downs and get-back-ups.
My friends and family joke that Kevin has "logged more time in the Operating Room than many New Orthopedic Surgeons." While a funny statement, it's no lie...:)
- 6 Knee Operations,
- 2 Major Back Surgeries,
- 2 Hip Replacements,
- Brain Surgery and Brain Radiation.
Each time, I had to call on the techniques I learned over the years to not only overcome but to succeed. I have found many self-help tools that I now write about so others can bounce back from being knocked down. I see many who want to quit. Quitting never produces results.
Q: What else do you want readers to know?
A: My life started out rough. My father was perhaps the meanest man that you could have as a father. People with fathers like him turn out to be serial killers. I used his bullying as fuel for my career. While I’ve had some really great success with my small movies playing around the world, I was and am still being tested to see how resilient I am. Scattered between a beaten childhood and career success has been a series of physical setbacks. Each time, I was left having to reinvent myself. I am a much stronger person than most now. Living by the motto, “I can do anything I wish.” At age 65, I’m thinking maybe it’s time just to tell others my stories and how they, too, can succeed if they never quit.
