In 2012, the Canadian Press ignited a firestorm of criticism by naming killer Luka Magnotta as its “Newsmaker Of The Year.” But while the recognition was questionable for its sensitivity, there’s no doubt that few people had captured the public’s attention like the young murderer and internet sensation.
A male escort and sometimes model, Magnotta had earned his notoriety by videotaping himself stabbing Chinese student Lin Jun to death with an ice pick and dismembering the body, before posting the video online. After mailing Jun’s hands and feet to elementary schools, he then led Interpol on a manhunt that ended when he was arrested at an Internet café in Berlin where he was reading news stories about himself.
An international celebrity in a macabre sort of way, with a legion of fans, Magnotta was brought back to Canada, convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to prison. During this time, Anna Yourkin, his estranged mother, troubled by Magnotta’s abused childhood and her role in that, reconnected with her killer son.
Despite his internet fame, Magnotta never agreed to any in-depth interviews. Now Magnotta has given award-winning journalist and author, Brian Whitney (RAW DEAL, THE SHAWCROSS LETTERS) an exclusive look inside the mind of this “social media” killer. I started this book in 2013. I wrote it from a place of hurt, devastation, love and confusion. Over the next three years I deconstructed my world looking for answers. I needed to come to terms with the fact that my son Luka Magnotta was charged and eventually convicted of first degree murder and why? I threw myself into my writing, I wrote in silence as the world came to their own conclusions surrounding the Luka Magnotta case. I refused to speak to the media, I just wanted to be left alone! As the years passed by and my research and discoveries were complete, the book was was finally finished. I absolutely loved your book. Such great insight into the case and your son, Luka. I am writing to you with what may seem like an odd request, which is to inquire about Luka’s time of birth. I know that he was born on July 24, 1982 in Scarborough, Canada (correct me if wrong), but his birth time is unknown. I would like this crucial piece of information, if you have it from his birth certificate preferably or know it exactly from memory, because I would like to do an astrological analysis of him on YouTube. I specialize in forensic astrology, and his birth chart can reveal an amazing wealth of information about his personality, what exactly happened on the day of the murder, why it happened, and so many other details. Without an accurate birth time, such a chart cannot be constructed.

Absolutely! Thank you so much for making this point so blatantly! Obviously, as parents, we never want to consider that our own children will become monsters like this. However, the fact is that her son robbed another set of parents of their son’s life and that is not something that can be explained away so casually. He deserves to be in prison for the rest of his life and the fact that his mother continues to fight that is an insult to to the victim, his family, and humanity in general.
